This is a great introduction to BMX for kids and adults alike. Several great riders have started on their career on the open track day.

If you want to race, there are a few requirements for safety reasons. We are an USA BMX Sanctioned track and strictly follow all rules set by the USA BMX.

As you get comfortable with racing, you will be come addicted to it, its a blast. Once you "get into it" you will learn about gear ratios, the various components on your bike and how to turn into a race mechanic in the parking lot.

Once you have decided you want to race, you will have to fill out this USA BMX membership form. We do have these at the track, but feel free to fill it out at home and bring it to our track. If you choose to fill it out on your own and mail it yourself, please make sure that you fill in our track number, ABA TRACK #1730 on the form. ABA does keep track of where people register. You will get an ABA card in the mail that will allow you to race at all ABA sanctioned races nationwide. You will be given a temporary plate number to use until your official number is assigned to you by the ABA.

The first things you need:

  • A bicycle - any BMX type and size will do, but it is recommended that you start with one that has no more than a 20" wheel diameter - as that is the allowable limit in the Novice class. However very young riders can ride a micro-mini BMX bike with 18" wheels. Others choose to race on a 24" Cruiser BMX Race bike.

Your Bike:

  • Make sure all bolts are tight - especially your axle and stem bolts.
  • Remove any freestyle type axle pegs.
  • All reflectors/brackets must be removed for safety purposes.
  • If your bike has a kickstand, it must be taken off.
  • You will eventually need a numberplate. You will be provided a temporary numberplate with your membership purchase.

Clothing and safety equipment:

  • Long sleeve shirt.
  • Long pants or jeans.
  • A helmet. The ABA recommends a full-face helmet. Many ABA tracks have "loaner helmets" for beginners to use.
  • Any enclosed shoe is sufficient. Skateboard style shoes are suggested.

When you start out, you are grouped with similar aged riders at the same experience level as you. When you first start out, you are a novice, this is regardless of age. You stay a Novice until you have won 8 times. After your 8th win, you move up to Intermediate. You will stay an Intermediate until you have achieved 25 wins as an Intermediate. After your 25th win as an Intermediate, you move up to Expert. Once you are an Expert you move up to Pro.

The only exception to the above classes is if you race on a cruiser, which has 24" wheels, not the typical 20" wheels. If you race Cruiser Class, you will be racing at the Expert class.

You get points for how you place, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc and points for how many riders where in your race (moto). The points you win are determined by what class you race, novice, intermediate, expert, etc. The type of race you are racing also determines how many points you earn, i.e., Nationals, State, Redline Cup.

It sounds more confusing that what it is. There are plenty of helpful people to help you get to know how the system work. You can also check your point status on the ABA website, as they keep track of the points for all the ABA Sanctioned BMX racers nationwide.

THE USA BMX  AMERICAN BICYCLE ASSOCIATION IS THE SANCTIONING BODY OF OUR TRACK. MILWAUKEE BMX FOLLOWS ALL RULES SET BY THE ABA.

Somewhere in California during the early 70`s, a bunch of kids on modified 20" Schwinn Stingray bicycles went out to a vacant lot and created a sport of their very own... Those kids were probably not even the first. The same scene of youthful energy and American resourcefulness was quite probably going on in Nebraska and/or New Jersey. But it was the California gathering of nameless pioneers who were recorded on film by Bruce Brown`s cameras. The resulting motorcycle film, ON ANY SUNDAY , would spread the word like a wildfire.

There was no stopping it now. A new sport created by kids for kids was born. Bicycle Motocross was the name it was given. That name was quickly shortened to BMX . It grabbed the attention of thousands of kids in one short summer. Boys and girls on their modified bicycles were seen jamming through the dirt emulating their motorcycle motocross heroes.

Imitation lead to innovation and quickly the kids were performing tricks and "getting air" that made their motorcycle heroes green with envy. The next step was organized racing. By 1977, pockets of loosely organized BMX races dotted the nation from coast to coast. It was time for a national sanctioning body and from out of this need, the AMERICAN BICYCLE ASSOCIATION was created.

The AMERICAN BICYCLE ASSOCIATION not only filled that need, it completely changed and continues to shape the future of the sport it serves. The first step was to create a system of qualifying participants that was not only fair, but one which enhanced the competitive nature of the very sport itself and still afforded each and every rider the chance to be a winner. This need for fairness and allowing for the fortunes of luck led the way to the transfer system, in which the winner of each moto advances to the next round - be it quarter, semi or main event.

That first step led to a long and continuing list of firsts that spell out the very success of the ABA . From supplying the first and world`s largest national sanctioning body, first national tour, first Pro purse, first Cruiser class competition, first sanction to call fouls as they occur, first starting light system, first automatic gate system, first voice command, first duel announcing, first computerized membership and points system, first computerized sign-ups, first computerized system for local tracks, first interactive website to service it`s members, first and most prestigious National Amateur Championship to cover all ages and the list goes
on…

ABA BMX racing is a sport of youthful achievement and the American family. While the young boy or girl BMX racer develops skills at an individual pace, they are learning about winning, losing and trying again. The racer`s family learns that time spent together is support of the racer and the individual achievements is quality time.

It is the duty of the ABA to establish the rules of racing that provide fair competition and fun family entertainment for all of it`s 60,000 plus members. This is a job to which the AMERICAN BICYCLE ASSOCIATION and all of it`s employees are 100% dedicated
